Catch a Falling Star By Reborn Artist Anita Borriel-Barker

Creating my Babies
Before I start creating any of my babies, I give the doll kit a long soak in Johnsons baby bath and let it thoroughly dry before I start to paint it. I spend hours painting each individual coat with Genesis heat set paints and heat set each coat producing a 3D skin effect. I give them eyebrows, little veins, capillaries, scratches, bruising and a faint blotching effect just like a real baby's skin and make each one individual. I will not move onto the next stage until I am absolutely certain and happy with each coat. I paint every little crease and crevice. When I have completed all of the painting stages, I finish with a matt varnish giving a remarkable and unbelievable real skin effect.

When rooting the hair and lashes, I use very fine rooting needles which are 43g. I use the best mohair on all of my babies. I pick up just one hair at a time, which is very time consuming but the results are definitely worth it. When the rooting is complete, I seal the hair from the inside of the head with a water based glue so the hair may be dampened when styled.

The babies body, head and limbs are filled with steel shot, fine glass beads, poly beads and lovely soft but heavy virgin fibre. None of my babies contain any sand, so can travel anywhere around the world. I always use disc jointed bodies on my babies so the limbs can be moved around and positioned to make baby look more active especially for all those beautiful photographs.

I create each one of my babies with compassion putting my heart and soul into each individual one of them. All of the clothes my babies wear, are all new. I take as much pride in how I dress my babies as I do whilst creating them.

One baby in particular, Bobbie I took out with me to a friends house. My friend sat with her on her knee and whilst chatting away to other people in the room her husband came in and handed me £10 and said "that's for her money box" then walked over to Bobbie still placed on my friend's knee and tried to place a 50p piece into Bobbies hand saying "there's some silver to cross her palm." It was so funny, but was also the best compliment and proof I could ask for that my babies are so real looking.
